HEPUREsm has announced the results of bench-scale testing of a proprietary zero-valent iron material, HC15™, in reducing carbon tetrachloride.

HEPURE’s HC15™ material is a proprietary engineered material with enhanced reactivity designed for difficult-to-remediate contaminants. This premium grade ZVI material is produced using an innovative manufacturing process which results in particles possessing a high density of reactive sites.  This is achieved by optimizing specific particle size classification and by controlling and manipulation of a proprietary combination of alloying elements within the structural matrix of the iron powder.

Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) is a chlorinated solvent which was commonly used as a dry cleaning fluid. Exposure to carbon tetrachloride may lead to adverse health effects. In 1970, it was banned in consumer products in the United States.  The Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) has been set at 5 parts per billion (ppb).

In a variety of bench-scale experiments conducted by the Oregon Health & Science University (OSHU) OGI School of Science & Engineering, The HC15™ proved highly effective in the chemical reduction of carbon tetrachloride. In particular, it was found that HC15™ not only reduced carbon tetrachloride at rates significantly faster than those of other micro-scale ZVI materials, but also that the reaction generated less chloroform. Hepure considers this material to be the most cost-effective ISCR material for carbon tetrachloride contaminated groundwater in the market.
